12/15/2004 - Medical Update on Don

We had a full and wonderful day on Monday (December 13, 2004), thanks to the anti-nausea medicine that the nurse from Hospice gave Don. He had become almost fearful of food, but today was feeling much better.

Don's favorite musician has always been Ray Charles, so we decided to go to the matinee! I can't even remember that last time we did that. Don enjoyed it immensely; he even stayed awake through the whole movie! We also ate out at one of our favorite chinese restaaurants.

Don received a very encouraging phone call from one of my Prison Fellowship colleagues, Jayne Crisp. Her father had also made this decision when he was only 65 years old. While he died rather quickly (within days), he was lucid to the end and had no pain. Don was blessed to speak to Jayne openly about the process of dying, since that is really what most of us fear.

It has now been a week since Don's one dialysis, and he is still ambulatory and able to eat. He is somewhat weak and sleeps off and on. Cellblock stays very close to him, frequently laying his head in Don's lap and licking his hand.

God is good! Thank you for all your prayers.
